Wherever you go in the world, people hang their washing out to dry. It's such a commonplace, universal activity that we don't even notice it normally. There is a simplicity and innocence about a line of washing and I wanted these photographs to celebrate the beauty of the ordinary and the domestic.

The clothes are like traces, or even ghosts, of their absent owners. They offer a glimpse into private lives; an entry point through which I can begin to imagine the stories and worlds of people I will never actually meet.
