Homes and Gardens

The idea of home is complicated. Often wrapped up in childhood, nostalgia, and dreams, home becomes something longed for, even for those who have never left theirs. Leaving home gives us a perspective on ourselves, our families, and culture. Astronauts often say they want to go into space just so that they can see Earth. To leave home may just be the beginning of the journey back to it.

Homes and Gardens, in a Letting Agents on Armley Town Street, Leeds, was the FSG's first exhibition. The group came together to tackle big themes: East German allotments, sleeping rough, all the houses one of the group has ever lived in, back-yard washing lines, and Armley foto-tourism.
